Photo Manipulation

The task within Photo Manipulation was to an enviroment or animal by merging multiple images together.

For this, I chose two animals I believed where opposites in the animal kingdom in terms of structure and purpose. I chose an aquatic mammal and a bird. Their structure are incomparable and design is ambiguous, however the heads retain similar and comparable shapes.

I chose two images that both had the same perspective, to make the manipulation and blending of the creatures easier. From there, using the transform tools I placed the eagle head over the seals head, ensuring the perspective fitted correctly. I then used basic Photoshop blending techniques and began to erase and blend areas together to form a more fluid transition between the two images. I also used the clone tool to copy and transfer fur around the body.

However, after completing the blend I realized the very detailed, human looking eye of the eagle was too ‘natural’ looking and needed to look more aquatic and exotic. For the eye I chose an aquatic lizard reptilian which had a very unusual looking iris. This made the image more realistic, otherworldly and slightly more sinister.

I used my understanding of biology and nature to externalise ideas of a logical creature. The result was an ‘alien’ type creature. In the future to ensure more accuracy with the blend of the creatures, I would watch further videos to enhance my skillset. I would edit the lighting and add more texture to the creature in zoomed focus so the full-size image had a higher resolution and quality – making it undetectable as an unreal creature.
